The official Evaluation ISO contains both:

✅ Windows Server 2016 Datacenter
Microsoft provides installation options including:
Server Core
Recommended for headless and remotely managed server deployments.
Server with Desktop Experience
Includes the complete graphical interface for administrators who prefer a traditional Windows desktop environment.
Evaluation PeriodMicrosoft's Windows Server 2016 Evaluation edition is valid for:
180 Days
Microsoft also states that the Evaluation installation needs internet activation during the first 10 days to avoid automatic shutdown behavior.
After installing the Evaluation edition, use your full-edition key and Microsoft's supported conversion process to convert it to the appropriate full version.
Important Support Lifecycle NoticeWindows Server 2016 is an older Windows Server release.
Microsoft has already ended mainstream support for Windows Server 2016.
Its Extended Support ends in January 2027.
This product is therefore best suited for customers who specifically require Windows Server 2016 for:
- Legacy applications
- Existing infrastructure
- Compatibility requirements
- Older server environments
- Testing
- Migration projects
For new infrastructure without a Windows Server 2016 compatibility requirement, consider a newer Windows Server release.
IMPORTANT — Choose the Correct EditionIf you purchased:
Windows Server 2016 Standard
Install:
Windows Server 2016 Standard Evaluation
If you purchased:
Windows Server 2016 Datacenter
Install:

This choice cannot simply be changed through the edition conversion process later.
Evaluation to Full Version ConversionMicrosoft officially supports converting eligible Windows Server Evaluation installations to retail/full editions using DISM.
However, not every Evaluation edition can convert to every target edition.
Therefore, always check the available target editions before entering your product key.

Important Conversion Notes⚠️ Always Run Get-TargetEditions First
Before attempting conversion, run:
DISM /online /Get-TargetEditions
This is the safest way to determine the editions supported by your current installation.
If the edition you purchased is not listed, a clean installation of the appropriate edition may be required.
⚠️ Datacenter Evaluation → Standard Is Not Supported
If you installed:
Windows Server 2016 Datacenter Evaluation
you cannot use this conversion process to downgrade it to:
Windows Server 2016 Standard
If you purchased Standard, install the appropriate Standard Evaluation edition instead.
⚠️ Standard → Datacenter Is Supported Where Listed
A Windows Server Standard Evaluation installation may support conversion to:
Standard
or:
Datacenter
depending on the installed configuration.
Always verify with:
DISM /online /Get-TargetEditions
⚠️ Standard Core Evaluation Limitation
Starting with Windows Server 2016, Microsoft documents an important limitation:
A Standard Core Evaluation installation cannot be converted directly to retail Standard Core.
It can only convert to an available Datacenter Core target.
Therefore, if you purchased Windows Server 2016 Standard and are using Microsoft's Evaluation ISO, Server with Desktop Experience may provide the more straightforward Evaluation-to-Standard conversion path.
Always check the target editions before installation or conversion.
⚠️ Desktop Experience and Server Core
Microsoft does not support using this conversion process to switch between:
Server Core
and:
Server with Desktop Experience
Choose the appropriate installation type during the initial setup.
⚠️ Active Directory Domain Controllers
Microsoft does not support converting an Evaluation installation directly to retail while the server is operating as an Active Directory Domain Controller.
If this is a new deployment, complete the Evaluation-to-full conversion before promoting the server to a domain controller.
For an existing Evaluation domain controller, follow Microsoft's domain-controller migration guidance.
